Fresh Picked Cherries. Learn to Can Them at Home, Make a Cherry Galette and Cherry Hand Pies

Little House Simple Living

“Do what you can, with what you have.” ~ Wendy Walker

Hi Reader,

Happy Monday Friend!

It’s Cherry Season! Whether you grow them or buy them (like me), there is nothing like fresh picked cherries. I’m a chocolate girl but I a seriously obsessed with fresh picked cherries.

I do have a cherry tree growing in my garden but they aren’t the beautiful deep bing cherries that I think of when I want a Cherry Galette or a Cherry Hand Pies. I’m showing you all about how I Can Cherries to keep on your pantry shelves for all year long.

They are harvested through mid-August so I hope these recipes inspire you to make something yummy for a Summer treat!

Grab a Box of Cherries (just like I did)

Organic Bing Cherries are 30% off right now.

In other news, I apologize for not sending this out on last Friday but I spent the day processing the notice that my cousin passed away unexpectedly. I’ll share more about it below but just wanted you to know that is why I’m late. Hug your family and friends and get together with them often. We are not promised tomorrow and we never know when the good Lord is going to call us home.

Recipes

Cherry Galette

This is like a cherry pie with a flaky crust but easier to make. It’s also a little more forgiving and looks even prettier if it’s a little rustic.

Canning Cherries at Home

Canning cherries requires a water bath canner. It’s one of the easiest fruits and it’s made with a honey simple syrup.

Easy Bakes Hand Pies

Fruit hand pies are the perfect breakfast addition or an easy delicious and nutritious snack to take if you are heading out to a sporting event or picnic.

A Little Personal….

So, my cousin has been battling with kidney disease for a good 35 years. When she was younger she had to have a few transplants. She managed to do really good through our “kid raising” stage even on dialysis. We would hang out a lot together, letting the kids play and going to 4H Swine shows at the county fairs.

Last Friday she passed away and it really stinks. I keep thinking about her and wishing I could just call or text her. I would do that to check in with her. We created a lot of memories over the years but the last several years, she became sicker and was constantly in and out of the hospital. I know she’s with our maker and the blessing is that she isn’t in pain anymore. Truly love your people. Things have been so crazy lately with people just dying. This is our temporary home and I like to look at as we are just passing through. She had an infectious smile and everyone who met her knew she loved you. Always upbeat and inspirational, no matter what kind of pain she was in. I hope I can make a difference in others lives like my cousin did.

Her Celebration of Life will be this coming Friday. I’ll try to get this week’s newsletter out on Thursday. ❤️

Garden Update

I quit gardening…for now that is. We have been having heat advisories all month long. The weather man said today was supposedly the hottest day of the year.

I can hardly grow anything right now and that is fine with me. I’m excited as I’ve been drawing out my Fall garden layout. I always get excited this time of year. August kicks off our planting season. We are blessed here in zone 9. I will harvest my fall crop in October and then I’ll plant winter crop that will be ready in December which will then carry me through the Spring until June. We usually are growing about 10 months out of the year here. I know when the rest of the country is in full swing during the Summer, that’s when us folks down here in the South take a break. Stay tuned. We do have a big project we are undertaking in the garden so I will take you along as we get started.

Coming Soon…

Stay tuned as I’m working on some final Summer recipes that will hopefully cool you off as well. 😎🌞😍
