“Do what you can, with what you have.” ~ Wendy Walker
Hi Reader,
Happy Friday!
Memorial Day is on Monday, May 25th. Maybe you have the day off. What will you be doing with your 3-day weekend? We have some projects we need to work on but other than that, we will be just relaxing.
When I was a kid, Memorial Day was a big deal. We’d go to the graves and put flowers on all of our loved one’s head stones. Afterwords, all of us kids would pile in the car while mom and grandma drove to KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). We’d get a bucket of chicken and all the sides and head back to my grandma’s house. Those were the days lol. Am I the only one who did this? Maybe it’s a WV thing haha.
See below as I’m sharing a few ways you can honor those who served and died on Memorial Day. If you have kids or grandkids, you can get them involved too.
If you do end up having a cookout or bbq, make sure to take this Peach Crisp with you. It’s peach season here in the South and boy, are they ripe!

Ways to Honor Those That Died For Our Country This Memorial Day
Memorial Day is about honoring those that died for us while serving in the U.S. military. It originated as “Decoration Day” after the Civil War, when people placed flowers on graves of fallen soldiers.
Let us take the time on Monday and show our gratitude.
Simple Daily Observances
• Fly the 🇺🇸 American flag properly — Display it at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then raise it to full staff for the rest of the day. This follows official mourning etiquette. You can also fly a POW/MIA flag.
• Observe the National Moment of Remembrance — Pause for one minute of silence at 3:00 p.m. local time. This is a nationwide call to unity, often accompanied by “Taps.”
• Wear a red poppy — This flower symbolizes remembrance and respect for those who died in service (a tradition linked to World War I).
Community
• Visit a national military cemetery or memorial — Place flowers, flags, or wreaths on graves. Many national and local cemeteries (like Arlington) have special events; check the rules in your area in advance. Organizations like Scouts or veterans’ groups often help place flags beforehand.
• Volunteer or participate in commemorative projects — Join efforts like placing tokens or flags at cemeteries through groups such as The Honor Project or local veterans’ organizations.
Note: Many people distinguish Memorial Day (honoring the fallen) from Veterans Day (honoring all who served). Phrases like “Happy Memorial Day” are often avoided in favor of more solemn acknowledgments.
Peach Crisp
This is the perfect dessert to take to any cookout or bbq. If you are near a peach farm, try and get them locally.
